ABSTRACT

Drama in education (DIE) brings artistic and educational aims together and holds a distinctive place in early childhood education. This study takes the child's standpoint as its guiding idea and draws on the historical figures and heritage of the Guangfu region as its cultural material. Working with 25 children in a junior class at Kindergarten A in Guangzhou, and using observation, interviews and action research, the study ran two rounds of DIE activities. The findings show that DIE in kindergartens currently suffers from gaps in teacher training, a shortage of teaching resources, difficulty in bringing local culture into drama, and thin cultural knowledge among both teachers and children. Designing DIE activities from the child's standpoint calls for well aimed objectives, engaging content, deliberate organization and workable evaluation. The two rounds raised the children's knowledge of Guangfu historical figures along with their capacity for imitation and performance. The study recommends sharper targeting of objectives, more engaging content, more purposeful organization and more effective evaluation, and offers practical reference and theoretical grounding for handing Guangfu culture on within early childhood education.
