Pu Songling and Edgar Allan Poe are the representative characters of Chinese and Western Gothic novels respectively. Their female characters, Nie Xiaoqian and Madeline, are both oppressed by the patriarchal society and suffer from physical and mental torture, but instead of compromising on this, they burst out with a stronger awareness of resistance. This paper mainly analyzes the awakening of Nie Xiaoqian and Madeline who are in a disadvantaged position under the patriarchal society in the midst of oppression.
